PRE TREATMENT & AFTERCARE ADVICE

PRE TREATMENT ADVICE

  • Cease using any home whitening kits and toothpastes. This will allow optimum results from your treatment.

  • For best results, gently brush your teeth before your treatment.

  • Don’t consume anything other than water 1-2 hours before your treatment and avoid foods that will stain your teeth for at least 24 hours prior.

  • If you suffer from tooth sensitivity, it is recommended to use Sensodyne or other de-sensitising toothpaste for a few days pre and post treatment.

  • Make sure you eat to your satisfaction prior to your appointment as you will need to wait a few hours after treatment before being able to eat.

  • There are eating restrictions after the treatment so please keep this in mind when you book.

  • Book your whitening treatment at least 48 hours before an event. For best results, start your first treatment 2-3 weeks prior to the event in case you decide you would like multiple treatments.

  • Booking in for a check up and clean with your dentist prior to your treatment is recommended as it is important to remove any tartar and plaque build up. It will also remove any food debris lodged around the teeth and crevices of the oral cavity. Having a professional clean ensures the whole surface of the teeth is whitened giving an even result. If plaque is present, the gel won't penetrate through to the tooth and may hinder your results. It is also important to identify and rectify any oral health issues you may have, including decay or gum inflammation. Please wait a few days after having a scale and clean before booking your treatment to allow gums to heal and return to normal.

  • Mouth piercings or other metal objects in the oral cavity should be removed before treatment as they may turn black.

  • Appointments should be rescheduled if you have any soft tissue or mouth injuries in order to prevent further irritation or injury.

  • It is helpfull to apply lip balm regularly for several days to keep lips soft and avoid lips splitting. The balm can be re-applied to lips at the appointment, prior to commencing the treatment.

  • If you have any concerns prior to your treatment, please consult your dentist.

AFTERCARE ADVICE

After the whitening procedure the pores of your enamel are open so your teeth are more susceptible to re-staining. It is important to follow the aftercare advice to enhance and maintain your whitening results for a long lasting, bright and healthy smile.

  • For the first 1-2 hours after treatment, refrain from eating, and drink water only.

  • DO NOT smoke for 24 hours. Smoking a cigarette within the fist 24 hours WILL re-stain your teeth.

  • Over the next 24-48 hours try to stick to THE WHITE DIET. This consists of light coloured foods and beverages to maximise the whitening process. Click the link at the bottom of this page for more information on THE WHITE DIET.

  • Avoid consuming dark or yellow staining substances such as tea, coffee, coloured soft drink, acidic food and drinks, red wine, curry, berries, tomato based sauces, soy sauce, etc).

  • If you must consume dark liquids, do so through a straw.

  • Avoid extremely hot or cold liquids.

  • If post sensitivity after treatment occurs, chew sugarless gum to reduce the peroxide levels and take Nurofen, Panadol, or what you would normally take for a headache.

  • For optimum results, continue to follow this advice for 3-6 days if possible.

  • Don't apply lipstick immediately after treatment. It can stain your teeth and leave behind a residue Also avoid tinted tinted lip balm.

  • To maintain whiteness and prevent stains from developing, I recommend using AP24 toothpaste. This toothpaste has a patented formula which places a protective barrier around each tooth and works to protect them from future staining and plaque formation. This gentle, vanilla mint formula freshens breath and provides a clean, just-brushed feeling that lasts all day. You can purchase this toothpaste in the salon or online.

Remember, anything that will stain a white t-shirt will stain your teeth!

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Avoid extremely hot or cold liquids. These are dangerous to your white smile because they change the temperature of your teeth. This temperature change (hot and cold cycling)causes teeth to expand and contract, allowing stains to penetrate your teeth. Try cutting down on these types of drinks (including coffee and tea) or try drinking them through a straw to reduce the amount of time they are in contact with your teeth.

Avoid foods and drinks that are acidic. Acidic foods and beverages open up the pores of the tooth enamel allowing staind to more easily penetrate your teeth. Use a straw to help minimise the contact of these substances with your teeth.

Cut back on drinking and smoking. Frequent consumption of alcoholic drinks and heavy smoking can reverse the effects of teeth whitening. Many alcoholic drinks such as wine have tannins that can stain the teeth. The same goes for the nicotine in tobacco. If you cannot quit drinking and smoking, at least try and reduce the frequency. Alcohol also reduces your resolve to avoid food that may stain your teeth.

Use smudge-proof lipstick to keep lipstick from getting on your teeth. Regular lipstick can stain teeth. Also avoid tinted tinted lip balm.

Don't skip a healthy diet. Make sure you're taking your vitamins and eating plenty of protein so that your teeth stay strong and resilient.
